The Ukrainian parliament – the Verkhovna Rada, on July 16, approved the appointment of Sergey Koretski as prime minister upon the proposal of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The previous prime minister, Yuliya Svyrydenko, was dismissed on July 14.

The government is formed by the parliament. The president proposes candidates for the prime minister, foreign affairs, and defense ministers, while the prime minister proposes candidates for the other government members.

In the Verkhovna Rada, the Servant of the People Party, loyal to Volodymyr Zelensky, and its allies hold a majority.

Sergey Koretski, born in 1978, has three higher educations in automobile and automotive economy, economics, and oil and gas production.

From 1997 to 2018, he held responsible positions in the "Kontinium" fuel holding, including CEO. Since 2018, he has been engaged in various business projects. In 2022, he was appointed director of the "Ukrnafta" and "Ukrtatnafta" enterprises, and in 2025 was elected head of the "Naftogaz" company.

In February 2014, immediately after the change of government in Ukraine due to a popular uprising, Russia occupied the Crimean Peninsula, annexing the region on March 18 under the names of the Crimean Republic and Sevastopol city, and established occupying regimes by also taking part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. On February 21, 2022, Russia recognized the Donetsk and Luhansk regimes as "independent states", launched full-scale military operations in Ukraine from February 24, recognized the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions as "sovereign and independent" entities on September 29, and on October 5 announced the annexation of those regions as well as the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Because of the war, it is not possible to hold elections in Ukraine.

In 2019, the first round of the presidential election was held on March 31, with Volodymyr Zelensky winning in the second round on April 21, and the Verkhovna Rada was elected on July 21. Local elections took place on October 25, 2020.

The parliamentary election scheduled for October 29, 2023, the presidential election scheduled for March 31, 2024, and the local elections scheduled for October 26, 2025, have been postponed.
