Scientists at Oregon Health and Science University have determined that sleep deprivation significantly shortens lifespan.
According to Milli.Az, the results of the study were published in the journal "SLEEP Advances".
The scientists analyzed a large national database in the USA, comparing survey results collected by the CDC between 2019 and 2025 with lifespan data. It was found that the quality and duration of sleep affect lifespan more strongly than diet, physical activity, and social factors. However, the quality of sleep lags behind smoking in terms of impact on lifespan.
In the study, sleep duration of more than 7 hours per day was considered sufficient. The scientists state that the impact of insufficient sleep on mortality risk had been noted before, but this new study for the first time revealed a consistent link between sleep duration and lifespan over the years.
The study does not explain the cause-and-effect mechanisms, but the researchers emphasize that nighttime sleep ensures the normal functioning of the heart, vascular, and immune systems. In addition, sleep helps protect cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and spatial orientation ability.
