Images showing autistic students being tied to desks with rope during class in a school in Turkey have been circulated.

Medianews.az reports that the incident occurred at BTSO Baha Cemal Zağra Special Education School located in Osmangazi district of Bursa.

The footage was recorded by a parent of a student attending the school using a phone. The Regional Education Directorate immediately started an investigation regarding the incident.

The parent, Tülay Gürel, stated that the students are not only tied up but also subjected to rude behavior and insults:
“There are many educational institutions in our city. But the incompetence and lack of knowledge of teachers cause serious harm. Our children suffer greatly due to uneducated teachers. Everything is done, from cursing to tying them up. We want a solution to this.”

Gürel added that a calm and suitable environment should be created for children who need special care:
“These children should have schools in quiet places. There are teachers who constantly give negative feedback to the children. My 11-year-old son suffers from autism. When he studied in Konya, even photos were taken. When we changed our city, we started having problems. When we take the children to school, they tell us that they cannot enter, it is forbidden. Having the child in an unsuitable environment causes serious harm. We have teachers who commit violence. These happen due to lack of knowledge and authority. They tie up the students to control them.”

Legal and administrative steps are expected to be taken regarding the incident.
