The 41-year-old politician is being appointed to the position of prime minister.

On June 23, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene, thereby initiating the government change process.

Medianews.az reports that according to the country's constitution, the president appoints the prime minister with the parliament's consent.

The government is formed based on the results of the election to the 141-seat parliament. In the parliamentary election held in October 2024, the winning Social Democratic Party formed a coalition with the Neman Dawn Party and the Alliance of Democrats for Lithuania, and in December Gintautas Palutskas took the prime minister's podium.

Due to his involvement in corruption scandals, Gintautas Palutskas resigned in July 2025, also stepping down from the chairmanship of the Social Democratic Party; the government collapsed, and in September a new cabinet was formed under Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene.

On June 6, 2026, the Neman Dawn Party was removed from the coalition, leading to the necessity of yet another government renewal. On June 18, the Social Democratic Party, the Alliance of Democrats for Lithuania, and the Union of Peasants and Greens signed a coalition agreement. Mindaugas Sinkyavičius was appointed to the post of prime minister.

Born in 1984, Mindaugas Sinkyavičius is the chairman of the Social Democratic Party. He served as Minister of Economy and Innovation from 2016 to 2017.
