The reason why oranges are sold in red bags has become known.

It is not a coincidence that most oranges in markets are sold in red or orange-colored bags. According to scientists, this color choice is based on a simple but effective visual illusion technique that makes the fruit appear riper, more vibrant, and appetizing.

National.az reports that the red or orange bag makes the orange peel color look darker and brighter than it actually is. Even slightly greenish or unripe oranges seem more orange inside the bag, creating the impression for consumers that they are fresher and juicier. A similar technique is used for lemons. Lemons are usually sold in yellow bags because red bags can shift the lemon's color to an unnatural orange tone.

This phenomenon is explained by the "confetti illusion" or similar color perception effects. Thin colored lines covering the surface of the object cause the brain to perceive the underlying color differently. As a result, although the actual color of the orange does not change, it appears brighter and riper to our eyes.

Karl Gegenfurtner, a perception psychologist at the University of Giessen in Germany, conducted research showing that this effect has been used in markets for years. The researcher proved with photos that oranges that look vividly orange inside the bag appear noticeably more greenish after being taken out of the bag.

The same technique is also applied to tangerines, grapefruits, and some other citrus fruits of similar color. Experts note that this method does not change the taste or quality of the fruit, it only affects the consumer's initial color perception, making the product appear more attractive.
