How much do Europeans work?

The statistics body of the European Union, Eurostat, has examined the working hours in member countries.

Medianews.az reports that, according to the report, in 2025, individuals aged 20-64 in the 27 member countries worked an average of 36 hours per week.

The shortest working time was recorded in the Netherlands (31.9 hours per week), and the longest working time in Greece (39.6 hours).

In Germany and Denmark, the weekly working time was 33.9 hours, in Austria 34 hours, in Belgium 34.3 hours, and in Finland 34.7 hours.

In Ireland, the weekly working time did not exceed 35.1 hours, in Sweden 35.4, in France 35.6, and in Luxembourg 35.7 hours.

In Italy, the weekly working time was 36.1, in Estonia 36.2, and in Spain 36.3 hours.

The remaining countries are ranked according to their weekly working hours as follows:

Hungary and Portugal – 37.4 hours

Czech Republic and Malta – 37.5 hours

Slovakia – 37.6 hours

Croatia and Cyprus – 37.7 hours

Latvia – 37.9 hours

Romania – 38.2 hours

Slovenia – 38.3 hours

Lithuania – 38.4 hours

Bulgaria and Poland – 38.7 hours.

The European Union was established in 1957 as the European Economic Community by Belgium, France, Italy, West Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

In 1973, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Ireland joined the European Economic Community, in 1981 Greece joined, and in 1986 Spain and Portugal joined.

In 1990, East Germany and West Germany united into a single German state.

In 1992, the European Union was founded on the basis of the European Economic Community.

In 1995, Austria, Finland, and Sweden were admitted to the European Union.

In 2004, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia joined the European Union.

Bulgaria and Romania have been members of the European Union since 2007, and Croatia since 2013.

The United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020.
