Is the institute of family collapsing in Azerbaijan? – Divorces have reached a dangerous level.

Recently, divorce cases have become one of the most discussed social problems in society. Financial difficulties, infidelity, mutual misunderstanding, psychological tension, and the influence of social networks in family relations are cited among the main reasons for divorces. Experts believe that the weakening of communication within the family and problems in the division of responsibility seriously affect the breakdown of relationships. What is currently the most common main reason for divorces? What steps should be taken to prevent divorces?

In an interview with Medianews.az, sociologist Elchin Bayramli stated that the problems observed in the family institution over the last 10 years have deepened even more.

According to him, global trends, modern lifestyle, and the wide promotion of individualism seriously affect the national family model. These changes are clearly reflected in statistical indicators as well.

“In recent years, the number of divorces has been rapidly increasing and is now approaching a dangerous level in relation to the number of marriages. At the same time, a significant decrease in the number of marriages is observed. The extended family model in families is gradually weakening; young families mainly settle for one child, or at best two. This is considered one of the main factors affecting demographic balance in the long term. At one time, the Azerbaijani family was considered one of the strongest and exemplary family models in the world. Unfortunately, in recent years, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain this model as before.”

According to E. Bayramli, one of the main reasons for the problem is the changes occurring in moral values:

“Moving away from national customs and traditions, the relegation of family values to the background, and the prominence of individual lifestyle affect the psychology of young people. People think more about personal comfort and free life, while family responsibility is pushed to the background. Another important reason is related to socio-economic factors. The difficulty of the housing problem, unemployment, and insufficient income delay many young people from starting families.”

The sociologist added that these trends are observed not only in Azerbaijan but also in many countries around the world. However, such a situation may lead to a decrease in the population renewal rate, disruption of demographic balance, and the emergence of social problems in the future.

“As a way out of the situation, both the promotion of national-moral values should be strengthened, and social support mechanisms for young people should be expanded. Measures should be taken consistently to provide young people with housing under favorable conditions, increase employment opportunities, and preserve the prestige of the family institution in society. If systematic measures are taken in this direction, it will be possible to preserve the national family model and prevent existing negative trends.”
