Hot cocoa not only improves mood but is also beneficial for supporting heart health. Research shows that dark chocolate and some cocoa powders with high flavanol content can help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.
Flavanols in cocoa protect blood vessels
Cocoa is rich in flavanols – these are plant compounds that act as natural antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory effects. Nutrition specialist Annet Durni notes that although flavanols are not essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals, they can positively affect heart and vascular health.
Studies show that dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoa dry matter:
supports heart health,
reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels,
helps lower blood pressure.
Another study revealed that a cocoa drink with a high flavanol content can prevent the harmful effects of prolonged sitting on blood vessels and blood pressure.
Annet Durni added that although these results are promising, further research is needed to determine the duration of the protective effect. It is also unknown whether regular hot chocolate or chocolate bars provide the same benefits since their flavanol content differs from the products used in the studies.
Cocoa content of 70% and above is recommended
To gain maximum benefit from hot chocolate, researchers advise choosing products with at least 70% cocoa content. Janet Andrade, an Associate Professor of Food Science at the University of Florida, notes that it is difficult to get people used to 80% cocoa chocolate because its bitter taste is unpleasant for many.
Therefore, some manufacturers add sugar to soften the taste. However, sweetened dark cocoa may not be as beneficial as sugar-free cocoa with a high flavanol content. Scientists warn that excessive sugar intake can lead to hypertension, inflammation, and increased risk of heart disease. (Milli.az)
