In 1947, the UN passed a resolution to divide the lands of Palestine to establish Israel and Palestine states in the area. Israel, established in 1948, was admitted to the UN in 1949. Palestine declared independence in 1988 and gained observer status at the UN in 2012.

A significant portion of the territories allocated to Palestine by the UN, including East Jerusalem (Jerusalem), intended to be the capital, is under Israeli occupation.
