Protecting heart health in cold, windy, and variable weather conditions requires more attention compared to other seasons. Cardiologist Iosif Shubitidze warns that in such weather, heart patients, those suffering from hypertension, and elderly individuals should not rush to stay outdoors for extended periods.
The specialist states that physical activity is necessary for the heart, but unstable weather conditions can create additional strain and negatively affect the functioning of the heart muscle. According to him, when winter walks exceed 30 minutes, a break must be taken, during which heart rate, general condition, and signs of hypothermia should be carefully monitored.
Shubitidze recommends avoiding strong coffee and dark tea before going outdoors and completely abstaining from alcohol. He also emphasizes that prolonged exposure to cold places additional stress on the cardiovascular system.
According to the cardiologist, unstable temperatures in winter cause blood vessels to constrict, which can result in sudden increases in blood pressure, worsening symptoms of arrhythmia, and heart failure. Therefore, it is essential for heart patients to always keep their medications with them, avoid stress and insomnia, and pay special attention to proper nutrition. During this period, the body requires more foods rich in vitamins and minerals.
The specialist adds that strengthening the immune system is especially important in winter because respiratory infections can quickly aggravate existing heart diseases.
