With the start of the summer season, the number of drowning cases in the sea has also increased. Some specialists associate this with unfavorable weather conditions and people swimming in prohibited areas. Other experts believe that the main reason is the transportation of sand from the sea. According to them, as a result of sand extraction, deep pits form at the bottom of the sea, which increases the risk of drowning.
So, is the main reason for drowning cases in the sea really the transportation of sand?
Medianews.az reports that ecologist and biodiversity expert Arzu Mustafayev, in an interview with Globalinfo.az, said the main reason is people's irresponsibility.
"Yes, especially in the areas of Baku, Absheron, and Khizi, uncontrolled sand transport has become widespread, and unfortunately, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) is either passive or unable to prevent this. However, direct sand extraction from the sea is both a very difficult and heavy process, and since the sand taken from the sea is wet, its use as a construction material is almost impossible. Therefore, the claims about sand transportation from the sea can be considered somewhat fabricated. It should be noted that even if sand is transported from the shore, the sea does not retreat because of this. This is because the areas where sand is transported are mainly located in the coastal zone," he said.
According to A. Mustafayev, one of the main causes of accidents at sea is temperature difference:
"Recently, the air temperature has started to rise sharply within a short period. As we know, the heat capacity of water is higher than that of land. Therefore, a significant temperature difference arises between the land and sea water, as well as between the upper and lower layers of the water. Suddenly entering cold water from hot air can cause muscle problems and cramps in many people. Another reason is people attempting to enter the sea in areas where swimming is prohibited. Additionally, some irresponsible individuals entering the sea after consuming alcoholic beverages can also lead to tragic incidents. One of the most serious reasons is especially people who do not know how to swim trying to swim in dangerous parts of the sea without properly assessing their physical capabilities. Overall, these are the main reasons for the unfortunate incidents that occur in the sea," he said.
