Tea and coffee reduce the effect of medicines – Important announcement

Taking medicines with tea or coffee is dangerous.

Medianews.az reports that this was stated by candidate of pharmaceutical sciences Igor Sokolski.

According to him, tannin contained in tea can reduce the effect of many medicines. Tannin interacts with the active substance of the medicine and prevents its absorption from the intestines into the blood. As a result, the medicine does not show an effect. Iron preparations, heart medicines, and digestive aids are especially sensitive to this effect. The specialist noted that drinking tea together with some antidepressants can cause unexpected results – anxiety and insomnia.

As for coffee, the caffeine it contains can increase the side effects of some medicines. For example, if painkillers are taken with coffee, it can put an additional burden on the kidneys and liver. Caffeine can also strengthen the effect of medicines affecting the heart and blood pressure, leading to arrhythmia and increased blood pressure.

In addition, caffeine has a diuretic effect and can cause the medicine to be excreted from the body more quickly.

The specialist recommends taking medicines at room temperature with non-carbonated and clean water.
