Belgium's Prime Minister Bart De Wever unknowingly took with him and brought to his country a pistol gifted to him by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
This was reported by the local "Nieuwsblad" newspaper.
It is reported that the head of government handed the gift package to members of his delegation. He stated that he only learned from the press at the airport after returning to Belgium that the gift was a weapon.
After opening the gift, De Wever handed the pistol over to the airport police. It is currently kept in the airport's safe.
The future fate of the gift is unknown.
