"A glass of wine before bed can speed up falling asleep, but overall seriously worsens the quality of sleep."
Medianews.az reports that neurologist Yuliya Prokofyeva said this.
According to her, alcohol weakens the REM sleep phase (rapid eye movement stage). This phase is important for memory and emotional balance. Additionally, it causes frequent disruptions in sleep during the second half of the night, dehydration, and relaxation of throat muscles. This can increase the risk of snoring and even sleep apnea.
The doctor also stated that the rule of "absolutely 8 hours of sleep" is not correct for everyone — different people need different amounts of sleep. Forcing oneself to sleep can further exacerbate insomnia problems.
Furthermore, the specialist spoke out against the uncontrolled use of melatonin supplements, noting that taking them in high doses can disrupt the body's natural hormone balance.
