The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) appointed Ayxan Abbasov as the interim head coach of the national team on September 30. Born in 1981, Ayxan Abbasov played for "Khazri", U-18, "Shefa", MOIK, "Turan" (two terms), "Inter", "MKT-Araz", and "Qarabagh" during his football career and served as coach for the teams "Zira", "Sumqayit", "Turan", "Shamakhy", and the youth national team (U-21).
Medianews.az reports that including interim coaches, since 1992, the Azerbaijani national team has been led by Alekber Mammadov, Agaselim Mircavadov, Kazbek Tuayev, Vagif Sadiqov, Ahmad Alasgarov, Igor Ponomaryov, Asgar Abdullayev, Carlos Alberto Torres, Shahin Diniyev, Gyoko Hajiyevski, Nazim Suleymanov, Berti Vogts, Mahmud Gurbanov, Robert Prosinecki, Gurban Gurbanov, Nikola Yurchevich, Gianni De Biasi, Arif Asadov, and Fernando Santush as head coaches.
