According to patent laws in Japan, only real people can be recognized as inventors.
Medianews.az reports that the Supreme Court of Japan has issued a ruling on this matter.
In 2020, an American engineer filed a patent application for a product created with an artificial intelligence system called "DABUS". Since the system operated completely independently, it was listed as the inventor.
However, Japan's patent authorities and courts rejected the application, requiring the engineer to designate a human inventor. Since the engineer did not accept this request, the patent was not granted.
The court emphasized in its decision that according to the law, the inventor can only be a real person and artificial intelligence cannot be accepted as an independent inventor.
