Although the wedding day is one of the most memorable moments in the lives of young families, high expenses sometimes turn into a serious financial burden in the following years. Many couples have to pay off debts incurred after the wedding ceremony for a long time, which can affect their ability to buy a house, have children, and carry out other future plans. So how does the debt burden arising from wedding expenses affect the financial stability of families?
Regarding the issue, economist Ilgar Huseynli told Democrat.az that citizens face very serious problems related to weddings:
"Actually, it is natural for people to want to hold a good wedding, to organize a memorable day for their children, and to celebrate that day in halls where better quality services are provided. But unfortunately, the prices of menus in wedding halls are currently so high that the average citizen behaves cautiously when it comes to holding a wedding. Because this can later turn into a debt burden."
The expert said that there are families who take out loans and go into debt to hold their children’s weddings, assuming obligations before the bank:
"Some families are also forced to borrow additionally to buy the dowry for their daughters. This additional financial burden arising alongside wedding expenses negatively affects the families’ future plans and creates serious difficulties in matters such as buying a house and the future provision of the children. In other words, the plans of the families as a whole are disrupted. Sometimes, unexpected situations related to the wedding also occur. For example, a date is set for the wedding, but the weather changes, it snows, or some of the guests cannot reach the event because they come from districts. As a result, some tables remain empty, which causes additional financial losses.
I think that certain regulations should be implemented in this area. Specific frameworks should be established regarding the price, quality, and amount of menus offered in wedding halls. This can help reduce the burden on citizens and contribute to the formation of a healthier approach," he noted.
