In the country, seasonal respiratory infections, especially influenza, have increased. The site Medianews.az has interviewed infectious disease specialist Polina Aliyeva about the type of virus currently circulating, its symptoms, and ways to protect against it.

- Why have influenza infections increased?
- The recent increase in seasonal respiratory infections, including influenza, is characteristic for the autumn-winter season and is mainly associated with people spending more time in enclosed spaces.
- What type of influenza virus is currently circulating in Azerbaijan: A, B, H1N1, H3N2?..
- Mainly influenza type A virus is reported to be circulating in the country. In particular, strains A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) predominate, but type B influenza virus is also observed.
- What are the main symptoms of the influenza virus circulating this season?
- High fever, headache and muscle pains, general fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, and in some cases nasal discharge. In children, symptoms such as nausea and vomiting may also be observed.
- Are there any severe or intensive care cases being observed?
- Severe and intensive care cases are mainly recorded in individuals belonging to the risk group – the elderly, those with chronic diseases, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. The risk of complications significantly decreases when a doctor is consulted in a timely manner.
- How effective are antiviral drugs against influenza?
- Antiviral drugs are more effective when taken within the first 48 hours of illness. These medications reduce the severity of symptoms, shorten the duration of the disease, and minimize the risk of complications. However, they should only be used under a doctor's advice.
- What protective measures should citizens follow in daily life?
- It is recommended to wash hands frequently, use medical masks in enclosed and crowded places, avoid close contact with sick individuals, consume foods that strengthen the immune system, and get sufficient rest.
- Are additional measures needed in schools and kindergartens?
- Strict adherence to hygiene rules should be maintained in schools and kindergartens, rooms should be regularly ventilated, and children showing symptoms of illness should be kept at home. Taking additional measures is considered appropriate in cases of mass infections.
