While sugar consists of almost 99.8 percent pure carbohydrate (sucrose), about 80 percent of honey is composed of various sugars. Therefore, both products are considered quick sources of energy, but their effects on the body may differ.
Demokrat.az reports that according to experts, both honey and sugar increase energy and add sweetness to food. However, honey is considered a more “nutritious” product due to its content, as it contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Based on research, honey can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. It may help reduce total cholesterol, “bad” LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, which are important indicators for cardiovascular health.
Although the glycemic index of honey is somewhat lower compared to white sugar, the difference is not significant. Therefore, its impact on blood sugar is not considered completely different.
Honey also contains small amounts of B-group vitamins, vitamin C, and minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. Particularly, dark-colored honeys have a higher amount of antioxidants.
Additionally, due to honey’s antibacterial properties, it is noted that it may have a supportive effect in wound healing and in easing cough during colds.
Some studies suggest that using honey instead of sugar could also be beneficial for weight control. However, these results mostly apply to raw (unprocessed) honey.
Nevertheless, experts warn that honey is not a product that "can be consumed in unlimited amounts." It is also high in calories, and excessive consumption can cause the same health problems as sugar.
In conclusion, although honey is richer in terms of content, the main issue is not which product is chosen but the amount consumed.
