The anticipated West-Russia clash in Georgia – On October 4...

On October 4, local self-government elections will be held in Georgia. Mayors will be elected for each of the 64 cities, and at the same time local councils will be formed.

In a statement to Medianews.az regarding the issue, political expert Mahammad Asadullazade said that the legitimacy of the parliamentary elections held in 2024, won by the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Party, is not recognized by the West: “The US and the European Union accuse Georgian Dream of pursuing a pro-Russian policy. Indeed, the decisions made by the Georgian government have brought relations with the West to a rather critical state.

October 4 will be a test day for the Georgian authorities. The opposition is boycotting the elections. Especially the camp led by former president Mikheil Saakashvili continues street protests. After these elections, it seems possible that the West will impose serious pressure and sanctions on Georgia. Because the official policy of Tbilisi is testing the patience of the West.

On October 4, supporters of the West and Russia will collide again in Tbilisi. However, the next revolution in the country is not expected. The lack of a unified leader in the opposition and polarization inside increase the effect of government pressure. The opposition looks for help in the West. However, the West does not intend to support the divided and fragmented opposition movements.”
