Georgia: 3.4 million voters, 3051 polling stations

3,476,140 voters have been registered ahead of the local elections scheduled in Georgia for October 4. Medianews.az reports that the Central Election Commission, which released the report, announced that 3,897,000 ballots will be prepared and that voting will be organized at 3,051 polling stations. Electronic voting (using appropriate devices) is planned at 2,284 stations, while traditional voting with ballot boxes will take place at 767 stations.

In the October 4 elections, mayors are to be elected in 64 cities and local councils should be formed. A mixed system (proportional and majoritarian systems) is applied in the council elections. To be elected mayor, a candidate must receive more than half of the valid votes. Parties must overcome a 4% threshold to enter local councils. Relative majority of votes is sufficient under the majoritarian system.

12 parties are participating in the marathon, with the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Party considered favored. In the elections boycotted by many opposition parties, the main competitor of the ruling party is the alliance of Strong Georgia – Lelo and Gakharia – Georgia For parties.

In Georgia, the party that has at least 76 seats forms the government in the 150-seat parliament. Georgian Dream has won the parliamentary elections of 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. The vast majority of local government bodies are also controlled by Georgian Dream.

The president in the country is elected by the Electoral College, which consists of members of parliament, representatives of the highest representative bodies of autonomous entities, and representatives of local self-government bodies. The presidential post is held by Mikheil Kavlashvili, who is affiliated with Georgian Dream.
