Innovation in the 2026-2027 season of the Champions League

England will send 5 teams to the UEFA Champions League 2026-2027 season.

Medianews.az reports that according to the regulations, 2 spots are allocated to UEFA members with the highest coefficients in the 2025-2026 season. England is leading in the coefficient table of the 2025-2026 season and has secured one of the spots. Spain, Germany, Portugal, and Italy are contesting the remaining spot.

UEFA's club ranking is based on coefficients earned in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. A win in the qualifying rounds is worth 1 point, a draw half a point; in the later rounds, a win is 2 points and a draw 1 point. Bonus points are also awarded from the league stage through to the final. The accumulated points are divided by the number of clubs qualified from the country to the continental tournaments, and a coefficient is calculated with precision to three decimal places.

UEFA, which has 55 members, initially plans to allow 84 clubs to participate in the 2026-2027 season.

Eighty spots will be determined based on the outcomes of national championships. England, Italy, Spain, Germany, and France will have 4 spots each; the Netherlands 3; Portugal, Belgium, Czech Republic, Turkey, Norway, Greece, Austria, Scotland, and Poland 2 each; and the remaining countries (excluding Liechtenstein, which does not hold a national championship), including Azerbaijan, are allocated 1 spot. However, Russia, under sanctions since 2022, may again be excluded from the season.

Two spots in the competition will be given to the teams that win the Champions League and Europa League in the 2025-2026 season.

There are four qualifying rounds in the Champions League. Teams eliminated in the first round will move to the Conference League, while those eliminated in later rounds transfer to the Europa League.

It is expected that the Azerbaijani champion will start the tournament from the first qualifying round.

In the 36-team league stage, the top 8 will advance to the round of 16, while teams placed 9th to 24th will go into the round of 32.

Held since 1955 and called the European Champion Clubs' Cup until 1992, the Champions League has been won 15 times by "Real," 7 times by "Milan," 6 times each by "Bayern" and "Liverpool," 5 times by "Barcelona," 4 times by "Ajax," 3 times each by "Inter" (Italy) and "Manchester United," 2 times each by "Benfica," "Nottingham Forest," "Juventus," "Porto," and "Chelsea," and once each by "Celtic," "Feyenoord," "Aston Villa," "Hamburg," "Steaua," PSV, "Red Star Belgrade," "Marseille," "Borussia" (Dortmund), "Manchester City," and PSG.
