The melting of glaciers has accelerated - Sea level has risen

Glacier melting worldwide reached one of the record levels in 2025. According to the information, glaciers melted altogether by 408 gigatons last year. As a result of this process, the global sea level rose by approximately 1.1 millimeters.

Medianews.az reports that the study was conducted with the participation of Monash University and the results were published in the journal "Nature Reviews Earth & Environment."

The research shows that 2025 was the sixth heaviest year for glacier losses since 1975.

Experts state that glacier melting has accelerated in recent years. Losses in the last decade have increased approximately four times compared to the late 20th century. Since 1975 until today, a total of 9,600 gigatons of glacier melting has been recorded, causing the sea level to rise by 26 millimeters.

Levan Tielidze, one of the authors of the study, noted that preventing global warming is crucial for reducing glacier losses and their consequences.//BAKU.WS
