Are dangerous potatoes being sold in the markets? - RESEARCH

In some markets, alongside potatoes intended for eating, technical, that is, feed potatoes are also sold. Although buyers purchase these potatoes because they are cheap, unfortunately, these types of potatoes are not intended for eating.

So how can we distinguish these potatoes?

Medianews.az reports that regarding the issue, food expert Məhsəti Hüseynova told Milli.Az that sometimes it is not easy to differentiate technical potatoes from ordinary potatoes:

"Potatoes that are excessively large, deformed, have thick and hard skins, with sprouts and green color visible under the skin, may contain the poisonous solanine substance. For this reason, it is not recommended to buy such potatoes. If after consumption there is nausea, dizziness, or a bitter taste in the mouth, a doctor should be consulted. Preference should be given to potatoes that have not sprouted or turned green when buying, and at home, they should be stored in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and separately from other fruits and vegetables."

Regarding the issue, AQTA stated that products sold in the markets are regularly monitored:

"If non-compliance is detected, those products are withdrawn from sale, and measures are taken against the responsible persons. As with all food products, potatoes are only imported and allowed circulation if they meet the regulatory requirements specified in the food regulations."

It should be noted that as a seasonal product, seed potatoes are also imported. No products named technical potatoes have been imported into our country.

So what health risks does eating potatoes have?

According to therapists, eating potatoes can pose health risks because they contain chemicals and excessive fertilizers:

"These products can cause various inflammatory processes and have a toxic effect on the body. They are not even considered suitable for animals because the harmful substances accumulate in animal tissues and subsequently enter the human body through the food chain. These substances accumulate in the body, damage cells, and can cause a general poisoning effect. Its impact is not characterized by a specific disease but by a general health risk."

Buyers are advised to pay attention to the appearance and quality of potatoes when purchasing. A correct choice not only protects our health but also prevents risks.
