Adding honey to hot tea Is it dangerous?

According to a belief spread for many years, adding honey to hot tea turns it into "poison."

Medianews.az reports that this idea mainly originates from Ayurveda and it is claimed that honey produces a substance called hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) when heated.

However, scientific studies show that HMF accumulates in honey not only when heated but also during long-term storage. Moreover, this substance is found not only in honey but also in many everyday products – coffee, juices, bread, chocolate, beer, etc. – meaning it is impossible to completely avoid it.

Experts emphasize that adding honey to boiling tea does not turn it into poison; it simply destroys beneficial enzymes and vitamins. Such a drink merely acts like a sweet syrup. For maximum benefit, it is recommended to add honey to drinks at temperatures below 40°.
