The railway line in Zangezur can be restored by Azerbaijan, not the USA – Expert

As is known, on August 8, the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia signed a joint declaration in Washington with the witness of the President of the United States, undertaking the obligation to establish neighborhood relations based on the inviolability of borders and the inadmissibility of the use of force to acquire territory. The foreign ministers of the two countries initialed a draft agreement on peace and the establishment of inter-state relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Also in Washington, an agreement was reached on the creation of a corridor passing through Armenia connecting the main part of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. This project will be implemented under the patronage of the United States.

Regarding the issue, political analyst Məhəmməd Əsədullazadə told Medianews.az that Armenia will negotiate with the United States for the restoration of the railway line in the Zangezur corridor: “This means a delay in time. Laying nearly 42 kilometers of railway line is basically not a difficult process. The railway line in Zangezur has been operational for many years. Also, this railway was owned by Azerbaijan. During the First Karabakh war, Armenia dismantled the road infrastructure. Nevertheless, there are possibilities to restore the railway.”

According to M. Əsədullazadə, the Armenian authorities can negotiate with Azerbaijan, not the United States, on this matter and achieve the quick restoration of the railway: “Azerbaijan has restored the railway up to the Armenia border. It is possible for Azerbaijan to restore the remaining 42 kilometers of railway within six months. We have full resources for this. But if negotiations are held between Armenia and the US on this level, the process will take about two years. Azerbaijan can appeal to Armenia and propose the joint construction of the railway.”
