The population in Japan has decreased to a record low.

In Japan, the population has decreased by 3.09 million people in the last 5 years, which is considered the largest figure since statistics began in the country.

APA reports that according to the results of the census announced by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as of October 1, 2025, the country's population was 123,049,524.

This represents a 2.5 percent decrease compared to 2020.

The population decline has been recorded for the third consecutive census period. The ministry explains this mainly by the lower birth rate and the aging of society, leading to death rates surpassing births.

Out of 47 prefectures, population growth was recorded in only two - Tokyo (1.4 percent) and Okinawa (0.1 percent). The largest decrease was observed in Akita (8.1 percent) and Aomori (7.9 percent) prefectures.
