With the warming of the weather and the flowering of plants, the dust particles (pollens) released into the air have caused an increase in allergic rhinitis cases.
Medianews.az reports that Turkish immunology and allergy specialist Mahir İğde spoke about this.
He states that spring allergy is widespread both in adults and children, but children are more affected by this disease because they are more sensitive.
According to the specialist, when one of the parents has an allergy, the likelihood of allergic rhinitis developing in children also increases.
How does allergic rhinitis develop?
An allergic reaction occurs as a result of the immune system's excessive response to allergens. Upon repeated contact with the allergen, a substance called histamine is released in the body, which causes typical allergy symptoms.
Main causes of spring allergy
The most common cause of spring allergy is pollens. The periods when they are abundant in the air are as follows:
- Tree pollens – March to May
- Grass pollens – May to June
- Plant and flower pollens – late summer and autumn
In addition, house dust mites, mold spores, and animal hairs can also strengthen the allergy.
Main symptoms in children
- Runny and stuffy nose;
- Itching inside the nose and frequent sneezing;
- Itching and watering eyes;
- Throat irritation and cough;
- Postnasal drip.
The specialist notes that prolonged nasal congestion can cause sleep disturbances, fatigue, and loss of appetite in children, and may even negatively affect school performance. If untreated in time, it increases the risk of sinusitis and asthma.
Ways to prevent spring allergy
Doctors recommend a number of simple measures to prevent allergy:
- Avoid going outdoors during hours when pollens are abundant;
- Regularly clean the house and keep windows closed;
- Use air purifiers;
- Prefer cotton or synthetic pillows and quilts;
- Maintain humidity balance in the room;
- Limit the number of house plants;
- Eat a balanced diet and strengthen the immune system;
- Use protective masks during gardening activities;
- Keep car windows closed and change air conditioner filters on time.
Doctors especially recommend that when allergy symptoms appear in children with asthma, they should consult a specialist without delay. With timely diagnosis and proper measures, it is possible to spend the spring months more comfortably.
