If Trump is not awarded the Nobel Prize... - EXPLANATION

The Norwegian Nobel Committee usually awards the Nobel Peace Prize on October 10 each year. Candidates for this prize are proposed by members of parliament, heads of state, leaders of international organizations, and some academic institutions.

One of the main candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 is U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has previously been nominated for the Nobel Prize but did not receive it.

Will Donald Trump be able to receive the Nobel Prize this time? If the prize is not awarded to Trump, could he launch a campaign against Europe, specifically against the Norwegian Nobel Committee?

Discussing the topic with Medianews.az, public-political figure and lawyer Gulamhuseyn Alibeyli stated that it is difficult to give a definitive answer to these questions: “Perhaps even the Norwegian Nobel Committee itself has not determined who will receive the award yet. I should note that the committee does not include politicians. It is mainly composed of members of the academic community, that is, scientists. It is risky and difficult to politically influence them. In many countries, scientists generally cannot be influenced. Do not compare with Azerbaijan. We have various ways to influence scientists. But in Norway, influencing scientists is practically impossible. Therefore, it is difficult for Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize under pressure.”

According to G. Alibeyli, generally, it does not seem very plausible that the award will be given to Trump this year: “What peace has Trump secured? Yes, under his initiative, a peace agreement was initialed in August this year between Azerbaijan and Armenia. But by that time, there was already an agreement and no war. Trump simply acted as a sort of mediator to expedite the initialing of the agreement. As far as I know, he has not been able to stop any war so far. He claims to have stopped wars between some countries, but that appears somewhat exaggerated. Currently, wars mostly continue in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine. Trump tried to stop the Russia-Ukraine war but did not succeed. Now he has agreed again to sell additional weapons to Ukraine. He also allowed strikes deep into Russia with the sold weapons. This is no longer peace; some might consider it an escalation of the war. Trump was not able to stop Israel’s attacks, at least the crimes committed in Gaza in the Middle East. On the contrary, in June, he even attacked Iran; missile strikes were launched against Iran on Trump’s orders. Trump also kind of blessed Israel’s next operations in Gaza. Considering all these, I believe the chances of Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize are very slim. He probably will not receive it. In any case, time will tell.”

Regarding the possibility that Trump will start opposing the Norwegian Nobel Committee if he does not receive the prize, G. Alibeyli stated that this cannot be ruled out: “Because he is a politician who takes unexpected steps. Recently, due to a technical issue at the UN, he tried to disgrace the UN in a way, claiming there is a plan against him. It is possible that he will say the Nobel Committee has taken some biased stance against him. This can be expected from him. But this has no significance for the scientists who are members of that committee.”
