When buying a smartphone, users mainly pay attention to camera quality, processor power, and memory size. However, experts say that long-term software support for the device should also be one of the main criteria when choosing.

Because phones that do not receive updates gradually lose access to new functions and may face greater security risks.

According to information published in foreign media, several popular smartphone models will reach the final stage of software support in the coming years.

The support period for many Samsung models is ending

Although Samsung applies a long-term update policy for its new flagship models, the support period for previous generation devices is gradually coming to an end.

Security updates for the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 models are expected to stop in August 2026. The Galaxy S21 FE 5G no longer receives new Android versions, and security updates will continue until January 2027.

Main system updates for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra models have ended. It is reported that security updates for these devices will be provided until February 2027.

Support periods for the Galaxy A53 5G and Galaxy A54 5G models will also end in the coming years. The Galaxy S23 series is expected to receive updates for a longer period.

Google Pixel and iPhone models are also on the list

Google Pixel phones are among the devices that receive new Android versions quickly, but support periods for older models are limited.

The last updates for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models are expected to be provided in October 2026. Software support for the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro models is reportedly expected to end gradually in the coming years.

Although Apple does not officially announce the support period for its devices in advance, according to the current update policy, it is noted that the iPhone SE (2020), iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max models may be excluded from major iOS updates in the future.

Users of old phones should be careful

Experts say that the end of software support does not mean the phone immediately becomes unusable. However, stopping security updates can weaken the device’s protection against cyber threats.

Additionally, over time, new applications may have compatibility issues with older operating systems. Therefore, users are advised to consider the update dates of their devices and plan their switch to a new smartphone in advance.
