Taiwan President Lai Ching-te made an unexpected visit to Eswatini (a small country located in southern Africa) and defended his country's right to establish international relations.

Medianews.az reports that, China reacted harshly to the visit, targeting the Taiwanese leader with insulting remarks.

Lai emphasized Taiwan's sovereignty in a meeting with King Mswati III of Eswatini: “23 million people have the right to connect with the world, and no one can prevent this.”

It was reported that the visit was not announced in advance. The Taiwanese side stated that this was done to prevent possible foreign interventions. It was previously revealed that some countries refused to allow the Taiwanese leader's flight due to pressure from China.

Beijing reiterated that it considers Taiwan its territory and called on other countries to refrain from official relations. Taiwanese officials described China's statements as "insulting and unfounded."

It should be noted that pressure on Taiwan had also been criticized by the United States and European countries. Eswatini is one of the few countries that maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
