The formation of the parliament in Syria has started. According to the rules of the transition period, out of the 210-member People's Assembly, 140 members are elected by the electoral colleges established in 14 regions, and 70 members are appointed by the president. On October 5, elections were held in 11 regions. Voting in the remaining 3 regions was postponed.
The October 5 election was the first election of the new period.
In the spring of 2011, the popular movement against the government in the country turned into a civil war. Relative stability has prevailed since 2020. From November 27, 2024, opposition forces launched a new military offensive against the ruling regime; on December 8, President Bashar al-Assad left the country and took refuge in Russia, with leadership passing to Ahmad al-Sharaa.
Bashar al-Assad has held the presidential post since 2000. From 1971 to 2000, his father Hafiz al-Assad was the president of Syria.
On January 29, 2025, Ahmad al-Sharaa was declared president for the transition period.
