Daily oral hygiene is often built on wrong habits accumulated over many years. Specialists say that simple changes help protect the tooth enamel and prevent gum problems and caries. Every day, millions of people unknowingly make mistakes while brushing their teeth that damage the enamel layer and cause harm to the gums. Incorrect brushing technique, improper timing, and neglecting hygiene rules can later lead to frequent visits to the dentist.
Lent.az reports that one of the most common mistakes is brushing teeth immediately after coffee or breakfast. The acids in food temporarily soften the tooth enamel. Brushing teeth vigorously during this time can cause erosion of the enamel layer. Dentists recommend brushing teeth either before breakfast or at least 30 minutes after eating.
Do not rinse your mouth with water after toothpaste
Many people rinse their mouths with plenty of water after brushing their teeth. However, this washes away the fluoride contained in the toothpaste. Having fluoride remain on the tooth surface strengthens the enamel and provides a protective effect against bacteria.
The correct rule is this: spit out the excess foam but do not rinse your mouth with water or eat or drink anything for at least 15 minutes.
Strong pressure damages teeth
Some people think that the harder and faster they brush their teeth, the better they will clean. In fact, this method causes gums to recede and exposes sensitive areas of the teeth. It is better to hold the brush at about a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface and clean the teeth with gentle motions away from the root or with small circular movements.
Don’t forget to use dental floss
A regular toothbrush can clean about 60 percent of the tooth surface. Since it is not possible to reach the areas between the teeth, it is essential to use dental floss every day. Brushing should last at least two minutes. At the end of the procedure, the tongue should also be cleaned, as it is one of the places where bacteria accumulate the most.
When should you replace your toothbrush?
Even the bristles of the highest quality toothbrush wear out over time and become a favorable environment for bacteria to multiply. Specialists recommend replacing your toothbrush or the head of an electric toothbrush every three months. Additionally, it is necessary to replace your toothbrush with a new one after having a cold, flu, or angina.
The role of saliva is also very important
Doctors remind that saliva is the natural defense mechanism of the oral cavity. Saliva cleans food residues and neutralizes acids that harm the teeth. To prevent dryness of the oral cavity, it is recommended to drink enough clean water during the day and avoid frequent consumption of sweet foods.
