Does sunscreen cause cancer?

Claims circulating on social networks that sunscreens cause skin cancer are not confirmed by scientific research. Experts state that properly used sunscreens, on the contrary, help reduce the risk of skin cancer by protecting against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Demokrat.az reports that according to the results of existing scientific studies, there is no reliable evidence proving that approved sunscreens cause skin cancer. Dermatologists believe that the main risk factor for skin cancer is UV rays from the sun. For this reason, regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher that protect against UVA and UVB rays is recommended.

Experts note that in some observational studies, the higher incidence of skin cancer among people who use sunscreen is not due to the harmfulness of the creams. The main reason is that individuals in the risk group – people with fair skin, those who work for long periods under the sun, and persons previously diagnosed with skin cancer – use sunscreens more frequently. This creates only a statistical association and does not prove causation.

A genetic study conducted in 2023 based on data from approximately 470,000 people is one of the frequently misinterpreted studies on this topic. The aim of the research was not to assess the safety of sunscreens but to investigate the influence of genetic and environmental factors on skin cancer.

Researchers stated that the higher observed incidence of skin cancer among sunscreen users is related to their greater sun exposure, insufficient use of sunscreen, or increased use of sunscreen by individuals previously diagnosed with skin cancer.

The authors of the study emphasized that presenting the results as "sunscreen causes cancer" lacks scientific basis and noted the importance of following proper sun protection rules to preserve skin health.
