During the meetings held within the framework of the visit of US President Donald Trump to China, the Taiwan issue was one of the main topics of discussion.
According to Medianews.az, Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated in his meeting with Trump that the Taiwan problem is the most sensitive issue in China-US relations.
He warned that if this issue is mismanaged, there could be a risk of confrontation between the two countries.
Experts believe that Beijing is trying to pressure Washington to stop arms sales to Taiwan. The US administration announced that it signed an $11 billion arms deal with Taiwan in December 2025. This step was strongly criticized by China.
A bipartisan group of US senators stressed in a letter sent to Trump the importance of Washington continuing its support for Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan to be its territory and wants the island to come under Beijing's control in the future. Taiwan, however, is effectively governed independently. The political division between the two sides emerged after the Chinese civil war in 1949. Nonetheless, in recent years, economic relations have continued to expand.
