The danger of the digital age: Ways to protect children from myopia

Experts warn that the increased use of screens poses a serious risk to children's eye health.

Medianews.az reports that Turkish eye disease specialist Sevil Karaman stated that myopia, which causes nearsightedness, is now observed at earlier ages.

Uncontrolled use of tablets, phones, and computers causes an increase in eye problems in children. According to experts, due to the impact of digitalization, the age at which myopia develops is gradually decreasing.

Sevil Karaman noted that simply reducing screen time is not enough. Children's lifestyle, genetic predisposition, and daily physical activity should also be considered together.

According to her, it is important for children to spend at least 2 hours daily outdoors to prevent myopia and slow its progression. It is recommended to keep the time spent in front of screens as much as possible under 2 hours. Proper lighting and distance are also important during reading and tasks done at close range.

The specialist stated that although completely preventing myopia may not always be possible, it is possible to control its progression rate. The development of the disease can be slowed through special drops, glasses, and contact lenses.

The doctor emphasized that each diopter increase in myopia raises the risk of complications in the back part of the eye. Therefore, early diagnosis, regular eye examinations, and parents being informed in this area are of crucial importance in preventing serious eye diseases in children in the future.
