The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has released photos of the convicted gang members. His post has brought renewed attention to the ongoing large-scale trial in the country.
According to Medianews.az, in the case where 486 people are accused, more than 47,000 criminal charges are being brought against the "MS-13" members.
MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) — an extremely violent and brutal international criminal group created by Salvadoran immigrants in Los Angeles in the 1980s, active in the USA and Central America.
According to the prosecutor's office, the suspects are accused of serious crimes such as murder, femicide, robbery, and arms smuggling during the years 2012-2022. They may face long-term imprisonment, in some cases over 200 years.
Since 2022, over 90,000 people have been detained under the state of emergency imposed, facilitating mass court trials. Human rights organizations report that these measures limit the right to a fair trial.
Some of the accused are held in the high-security CECOT prison opened in 2023. The government has announced that the strict measures have produced results and that the crime rate in the country has decreased.
