How were the mandates distributed in Moldova?

The preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held in Moldova on September 28 have been announced. According to official information, the ruling Movement and Solidarity Party affiliated with President Maia Sandu wins 55 seats in the 101-seat parliament, while the main opposition force - the Patriotic Bloc, which unites four pro-Russian parties, gains 26 mandates.

It is reported that the Alternative Bloc received 8 mandates, and both Our Party and the Home Democracy Party secured 6 mandates each.

Medianews.az notes that in the country, the party holding more than half of the mandates in the legislative body forms the government. In the parliament formed by proportional representation, parties must gather at least 5 percent of valid votes and blocs 7 percent to gain representation.

Moldova's Transnistrian region declared its separation from the country in 1990. In the armed conflict that arose related to this, Russian troops sided with the separatist regime and have controlled the territory since then.

The area densely populated by Turkic-speaking Gagauz was granted autonomous status in 1994. The authorities of the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit (Gagauz Yeri) are considered close to Russia.

A part of the opposition forces is also aligned with Russia.

Moldova has been a candidate for European Union membership since June 23, 2022.

Maia Sandu, known for her pro-Western stance, was elected president in nationwide elections in 2020 and 2024.
