During excavations in Panama, a grave dating back to 800-1000 BC was discovered.

Archaeologists reported that the skeletal remains were surrounded by gold jewelry and ceramics.

Researchers suspect that it belonged to a person of high status.

The discovery was made in the El Cano archaeological area in the Nata region, 200 km southwest of Panama City. The lead archaeologist of the excavation, Julia Mayo, stated that the grave dates back to the 8th-11th centuries.

In the grave, two bracelets, two earrings, and gold necklaces with bat and crocodile figures were found. J. Mayo noted that the person buried with gold jewelry had the highest social status in the group.

The El Cano archaeological area was used as a burial center for the dead for approximately 200 years. On Friday, excavations were carried out on nine other graves similar to the previously discovered grave.

The Ministry of Culture of Panama announced that the excavations hold great importance for the country's archaeology and for the study of Pre-Hispanic societies in Central America. According to experts, this discovery shows that in those societies, death was not only considered an end but also a stage where social status was preserved and maintained./"Qafqazinfo"
