33 children have died as a result of a meningitis epidemic in the Sokoto region of northern Nigeria.
Medianews.az reports that, according to the state's health commissioner Faruk Abubakar, the disease, which started about a month ago, has now spread to 8 districts.
During this period, 256 suspected infections have been recorded.
According to the information, the disease has mainly spread among children aged 1-15. Crowded living conditions and dry winds are cited as the main factors increasing the risk of infection.
The official body stated that urgent measures have been intensified amid the expansion of the epidemic. The Nigerian government has announced that it is implementing new programs to fight meningitis and eliminate the disease by 2030.
It should be noted that meningitis is a dangerous infectious disease transmitted through airborne droplets and primarily damages the brain and nervous system.
