U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington did not prevent Iran from participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Medianews.az reports that, according to him, no one from the U.S. told Iran that they should not come.
Iran's Minister of Sports said in March that the country's participation in the tournament was not possible due to the geopolitical situation. Later, the Iranian Football Federation announced that negotiations were underway with FIFA to move the matches from U.S. territory to stadiums in Latin America.
The championship will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Iran is scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand in Group G.
