Persistent cough may be caused by serious illnesses - WARNING

Cough lasting for weeks after respiratory infections causes serious concern for many people.

Medianews.az reports that chest diseases specialist, professor Tevfik Özlü stated that it is important to carefully approach coughs that do not pass for a long time.

According to him, after flu and colds, which are frequently encountered in winter months, cough lasts for a long time in some people. Even if other symptoms of the infection subside, coughing episodes occurring day and night, disturbing the sleep regime, should not be taken lightly. In such situations, it is necessary to definitely consult a chest diseases specialist.

The specialist noted that prolonged cough is often related to excessive sensitivity of the respiratory tract. In some cases, infection intensifies allergic reactions. This situation can exacerbate pre-existing asthma or allergic rhinitis in some people, while for others, such symptoms appear for the first time.

Tevfik Özlü stated that respiratory tract sensitivity varies from person to person. Some individuals may react more strongly to gases, odors, dust, mold fungi, and other allergens, which causes coughing.

The specialist emphasized that prolonged cough does not disappear with simple methods. According to him, cough that does not pass with ordinary cough syrups, honey, and herbal teas, which lowers the quality of daily life, must be examined.

The professor added that sometimes persistent cough may also be a symptom of more serious diseases. Heart failure and even lung cancer are detected in some cases through cough.

Normally, cough lasts 3–5 days and passes after respiratory infections. However, if this duration extends and exceeds 3–8 weeks, a medical examination must be conducted to determine the cause.
