Israel-“Hezbollah”: The chronology of a 44-year unresolved conflict

Although the war initiated by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28 was halted by an initial ceasefire agreement, Israel continues to fight with "Hezbollah" forces in Lebanese territory.

Medianews.az reports that the Israel-"Hezbollah" confrontation has a 44-year history. That is, this conflict has been ongoing since the time "Hezbollah" was created.

Medianews.az presents the chronology of the main phases of the war between Israel and "Hezbollah" until 2026, citing the US "Associated Press" agency.

1982 – Israel enters Lebanese territory and conducts operations against the Palestine Liberation Organization and its allied groups. During this period, "Hezbollah" is created with the support of Iran, and "Hezbollah" begins guerrilla warfare against Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon.

1992 – The leader of "Hezbollah," Abbas Musawi, is killed by a missile strike from an Israeli helicopter. Hassan Nasrallah replaces him and leads the organization for many years.

1996 – Israel conducts a military operation to push "Hezbollah" north of the Litani River. As a result of shelling the Qana region, where a United Nations base is located, at least 100 civilians are killed.

2000 – After a long confrontation, Israeli forces withdraw from southern Lebanon. This event is presented in the Arab world as a major victory for "Hezbollah".

2006 – An attack by "Hezbollah" fighters on an Israeli patrol leads to a month-long war. The battles end without a result, but Israeli bombings cause serious destruction in southern Lebanon and southern Beirut suburbs. This destructive military method later becomes known as the "Dahiya Doctrine".

2008 – "Hezbollah"'s military leader Imad Mughniyeh is killed in a car explosion in Damascus. Israel is held responsible for the attack.

2012 – During the civil war in Syria, "Hezbollah" joins the fight to support Bashar al-Assad's government. In subsequent years, Israel periodically carries out air strikes in Syria targeting Iranian and "Hezbollah" positions.

October 8, 2023 – After Hamas's attack on southern Israel, "Hezbollah" launches rocket strikes along the border. Israel responds and relatively less intense clashes begin.

September 17, 2024 – Israel attacks "Hezbollah" members in Lebanon using pagers containing explosive devices. The next day, a similar attack occurs using radios. Dozens of people die and thousands are injured.

September 27, 2024 – Hassan Nasrallah is killed in southern Beirut as a result of large-scale Israeli air strikes.

November 27, 2024 – A ceasefire agreement mediated by the US formally halts the war. Nevertheless, Israel continues its strikes to prevent "Hezbollah" from rearming in Lebanon.

March 2, 2025 – After Israel and the US attack Iran, a large-scale war begins in the region. "Hezbollah" launches rocket strikes on Israel and explains them as a response to the killing of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei and Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
