Who is Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei? – FILE

As we have reported, the Assembly of Experts of Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have jointly decided to select Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, as Iran's new supreme leader.

Bizim.Media presents the dossier of Mojtaba Khamenei:

Mojtaba was born on September 8, 1969, in Mashhad. After finishing high school, he began studying theology. His first teachers included his father Ali Khamenei and Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.

In 1999, he continued his education in Qom to specialize as a cleric. There, he studied under well-known clerics such as Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani, and Mohammad Baqir Khorramshahi.

He participated in the Iran-Iraq war during 1987-1988. Mojtaba also oversaw the "Basij" militias used to suppress mass protests related to the 2009 elections.

He has long been considered one of the most ambitious candidates to succeed his father. Mojtaba holds significant influence among the IRGC leaders.

Political influence, election accusations, and conflict with Ahmadinejad

Mojtaba Khamenei was once selected due to his close ties with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and supported him in the 2005 and 2009 presidential elections. During the June 2009 "Green Movement," he is suspected to have played a key role in organizing repression against anti-government protesters.

In those elections, reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi wrote an open letter accusing Mojtaba Khamenei of illegally interfering by referring to the "network," claiming the elections were rigged in favor of Ahmadinejad.

Mojtaba married Zahra Haddad-Adel (daughter of a former parliament speaker) in 2004, and they have one child.
