Former Deputy Prime Minister sentenced to arrest – Accusation against Abbas Abbasov

Medianews.az reports that the statement issued on February 12 by the State Security Service (DTX) about preventing the forcible seizure of power in Azerbaijan and the attempt to forcibly change the constitutional structure of the state confirms that information and also provides additional details.

It becomes clear that Abbas Abbasov was not only wanted but also that the court has chosen a preventive arrest measure in absentia because he was outside the territory of Azerbaijan and hiding from investigation.

It is also revealed what Abbas Abbasov is accused of: he has been held liable as a person accused under Article 278.1 of the Criminal Code.

Article 278.1 concerns actions aimed at the forcible seizure of power or forcible retention of power in violation of the Constitution of Azerbaijan, as well as forcible alteration of the state's constitutional order. These acts are punishable by imprisonment for 12 to 20 years or life imprisonment.

Abbas Aydin oglu Abbasov was born on August 4, 1949, in the city of Kirovabad (Ganja) (his father is from Malibeyli village of Nagorno-Karabakh, his mother is from Ganja).

He graduated from the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute (Azerbaijan State Agrarian University) in 1971. That same year, he began working as a veterinary doctor at the Republican Veterinary Laboratory. In 1972-1973, he served in the military.

Starting in 1973, he worked in the poultry industry of the Absheron district as a veterinary doctor, workshop chief; from 1979 to 1982, he was the director of the Baku Broiler Plant; from 1982, deputy director in the poultry industry in Uzbekistan; from 1983 to 1989, deputy chairman of the State Poultry Industry Committee of the Uzbek SSR; from 1989, chief director of Absheron Poultry Agrarian-Production Firm; from 1990 to 1991, first secretary of the Absheron District Party Committee and chairman of the district People's Deputies Council Executive Committee.

In December 1991, he was appointed State Adviser on Agrarian Policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Since 1992, he worked as the first deputy prime minister of Azerbaijan. In 2006, he was relieved from the position of first deputy prime minister.

He was a member of parliament from 1990 to 1995.

He was awarded the “Istiglal” Order of Azerbaijan.

Since leaving the Cabinet of Ministers, Abbas Abbasov has been living in Moscow, the capital of Russia.

In 2012, he founded the Russian Azerbaijan Organizations Union and headed this organization, known in Azerbaijan as the “Union of Billionaires.”

According to information, he has not returned to Azerbaijan since 2013.
