Hantavirus hides in sperm for years - It is also transmitted sexually.

Swiss scientists have discovered that hantavirus can persist in male sperm for years. According to a new study, the virus can live in the male reproductive system for up to six years after infection.

Medianews.az, citing Lent.az, reports that the study was conducted by Switzerland's state laboratory specializing in biological, chemical, and nuclear hazards.

The scientists examined a 55-year-old Swiss citizen who contracted the Andes hantavirus strain during a trip to South America. During examinations, it was determined that the virus was no longer detectable in the blood, urine, and respiratory tracts. However, traces of the virus were found in sperm analyses 71 months after infection.

The study authors state that the male testes can serve as a reservoir for some dangerous viruses. The reason for this is that the immune system does not fully attack spermatozoa. This characteristic allows certain viruses to remain in the reproductive system for a prolonged period.

Experts note that similar cases have previously been observed with Ebola and Zika viruses. In particular, in 2021, the spread of the Ebola virus in Guinea was reported to be connected to a person who had contracted the disease years earlier.

The study authors emphasized that hantavirus has the potential for sexual transmission, although such cases have not yet been officially confirmed.

Following the results, analysts from Airfinity, a company monitoring global health risks, have proposed the development of specific safety protocols for male patients. They suggest that an approach similar to the protocols implemented by the World Health Organization for Ebola could be applied in this matter.

Currently, specialists recommend that such patients use protective measures for a certain period or abstain from sexual activity.
