Georgia: How many candidates are there in the election race?

According to the latest statistics regarding the local elections to be held in Georgia on October 4, there are 122 candidates for the mayoral posts in 64 cities. It is reported that 5,193 people are competing through the proportional system (party lists) for council membership, and 2,231 people are competing through the majoritarian system.

Medianews.az notes that to be elected mayor, it is required to receive more than half of the valid votes. To enter the councils, parties must pass the 4 percent threshold. In the majoritarian system, a relative majority of votes, not less than 40 percent, is sufficient.

The number of registered voters is shown as 3 million 513 thousand 818 people.

In the marathon involving 12 parties, the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Party is favored to win. Its main competitor is the alliance of the Strong Georgia – Lelo and Gakharia – For Georgia parties.

In Georgia, the government is formed by the party that has at least 76 seats in the 150-seat parliament. Georgian Dream won the parliamentary elections in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. Georgian Dream also controls the vast majority of local government bodies.

The president in the country is elected by an Electoral College composed of members of parliament, the highest representative bodies of autonomous entities, and representatives of local self-government bodies. The president post is held by Mikheil Kavlashvili, who is affiliated with Georgian Dream.
