France: former president on the eve of a new sentence

The Paris Criminal Court has partially found France's former president Nicolas Sarkozy guilty in the case initiated on charges of illegally receiving funds from the Libyan government.

Medianews.az reports that the news was released on September 25. The prosecution requested a 7-year prison sentence and a fine of 300,000 euros for Nicolas Sarkozy, along with depriving him of the right to be elected for 5 years.

Nicolas Sarkozy, born in 1954, held the post of President of France from 2007 to 2012. The prosecution claims that he received a large sum of money from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in exchange for political support for his campaign during the time he was elected president.

Muammar Gaddafi led Libya from 1969 to 2011 and was killed on October 20, 2011.

On March 1, 2021, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to 3 years in prison on charges of corruption. Of that sentence, 2 years were suspended.

On September 30, 2021, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to 1 year in prison. According to the charge, Sarkozy's campaign for the 2012 presidential election was illegally financed.

On May 17, 2023, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to 3 years in prison. The politician was found guilty of corruption and influence peddling. Of the sentence, 2 years were suspended.

Because French law allows a person sentenced to less than 2 years of actual imprisonment to serve their sentence under house arrest, Nicolas Sarkozy was not detained.
