A new study conducted in Spain shows that being physically healthy not only improves the quality of life but also significantly reduces the risk of numerous diseases.
Medianews.az reports that the research carried out by the Mar Hospital Research Institute based in Barcelona and Ramon Llull University was published in the "Journal of Medicine and Sports Sciences."
The cardiorespiratory capacity of the participants—meaning the ability of the heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to the body during exercise—and their genetic predispositions were analyzed. The results show that physical fitness is not only related to diseases but can also have a direct protective effect.
In individuals with high physical capacity:
- Heart diseases and some typical types of stroke were observed less frequently;
- Arterial stiffness and blood pressure were within normal ranges;
- Metabolism, bone health, lung, and liver functions were positively affected;
- The risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and asthma was reduced.
The study also shows that the benefits of physical fitness extend to cognitive functions. Individuals with higher cardiorespiratory capacity had better learning and academic performance indicators.
However, the research emphasizes that not all types of intense exercise are beneficial. Particularly, in high-intensity and excessive workouts, there was an observed risk of atrial fibrillation and an increase in systolic blood pressure. Experts highlight the importance of a balanced dose and intensity of exercise.
Physical fitness is not just a health indicator but a key factor that directly reduces the development of diseases. Sustainable physical activity creates a long-term protective effect for a healthy life.
