The hidden danger in your home - Which famous product pollutes the air?

Experts call on consumers to be more conscious when choosing fragrance for the home because there is a hidden danger from nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter.

Medianews.az, citing Lent.az, reports that a cozy evening spent by candlelight can turn into a serious test for your lungs. New scientific data shows that a popular decorative element can pollute indoor air even more than cigarette smoke, creating an invisible but real threat to the health of all family members.

The invisible enemy hidden in aromatic flames

Researchers Asit Kumar Mishra from the National University in Cork, Ireland, and Mari Coggins from Galway University thoroughly analyzed the air composition in places where aromatic candles are frequently burned. The results were alarming: in such rooms, the level of fine particulate matter is 15 times higher than the norm established by the World Health Organization.

Additionally, during the combustion process, a number of harmful gases are released:

Sulfur dioxide;

Carbon monoxide (CO);

Nitrogen oxides (NOx).

From the perspective of negative impact on air quality, a candle can be up to 4 times more dangerous than a cigarette, particularly with regard to the accumulation of fine particulate matter. These particles deeply penetrate lung tissue. Doctors warn that the body's reaction can be both immediate and cumulative. Short-term symptoms are often mistaken for ordinary fatigue or mild allergy: eye and nose-throat irritation, sneezing, and discomfort while breathing.

However, regular use of candles poses more serious risks:

Development of chronic bronchitis;

Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases;

Potential onset of oncological processes in the lungs.

Asthma patients are especially at risk. For them, aromatic smoke is a strong trigger that can cause exacerbation of the disease. It should be noted that candles made from natural wax are not completely safe either: their composition can react with ozone in indoor air, creating harmful substances.

How to reduce harm without giving up comfort

If you do not want to completely give up candles, experts recommend following three main rules:

Space: Light candles only in large and well-ventilated rooms.

Ventilation: Place them near an open window or use them on terraces and balconies.

Time: Since most harmful substances are released during combustion, do not keep a candle burning for more than 20–30 minutes.

By following these simple rules, you can create a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere at home without harming your health.
